from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David Benjamin Kaplan (born July 2, 1958 ) is an American theoretical physicist who deals with particle physics.

Life

Kaplan studied from 1976 to 1980 at Stanford University and received his doctorate in 1985 with Howard Georgi at Harvard University with the thesis The Composite Higgs Mechanism . He then was at the Harvard Society of Fellows until 1988 . From 1988 to 1993 he was a professor at the University of California at San Diego . In 1990 he received a research grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellowship ). He has worked at the University of Washington since 1994 and has been director of the associated Institute for Nuclear Theory (INT) since 2006 .

His research areas include strong interaction , physics beyond the standard model , cosmology and particle physics, as well as lattice theory . Among other things, he became known for his formulation of chiral fermions on the grid .

In 1998 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . Kaplan was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2013 and to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2015.

David B. Kaplan was married to physicist Ann Nelson , who died on August 4, 2019 in a mountain accident in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in Washington.
