Tonnie Heijnen (born June 3, 1967 in Rotterdam , Netherlands ) is a Dutch disabled athlete in table tennis . He took part in the Paralympics three times .

Career

Heijnen initially played football. When he suffered a cruciate ligament rupture at the age of 21, he changed sport and played table tennis for the first time. He was active in changing clubs. In 2002 he lost a leg in a car accident. Since then he has been taking part in national and international tournaments as a disabled athlete. Less than two years after the accident, Heijnen had his first success at the Paralympics. He won gold with the Dutch disabled team. Through these achievements, he was in eighth place in the world rankings. He won the Dutch championships three times in eleven participations and was second five times. At the Paralympic Games in 2012 he was without a medal.

Heijnen is also active in table tennis in Germany. He plays for SC Union Emlichheim .
