Toompine is known in Queensland as Pub without a town (German: Pub without a town ). The place is important for opal seekers in Australia as there are opal fields in its vicinity. Toompie is 74 kilometers from Quilpie and can be reached from the Opal Highway .

The place was previously approached by the transport company Cobb & Co. Today the Toompine Hotel is reminiscent of the town in the outback, dating from around 1893, which was built during the pioneering days of Australia. You can stay overnight in the building and camp nearby. The hotel and pub is now run by two people who make up the current population of this settlement.

You can fish in the nearby Duck River and near the river and Sheep Creek Station are the opal mines. Opals can also be purchased in the station. One kilometer from the Toompine is the local cemetery. There is a runway for aircraft in the immediate vicinity of the Toompine.
