Tootsie Roll Industries is an American confectionery manufacturer based in Chicago .
history
In 1896, Austrian immigrant Leo Hirshfield began working in a candy store in New York City that belonged to the Stern & Staalberg company . In 1907, Hirshfield decided that he wanted to make a chocolate bonbon that wouldn't melt in the heat and launch it as an alternative to traditional pralines. He named the candy after his daughter Clara "Tootsie" Hirshfield's nickname. During the Second World War, the Tootsie Roll was part of the standard ration for soldiers. In 2004 Tootsie Roll Industries took over the Canadian company Concord Confections and with it the Dubble Bubble label.
