A top loader ( English top "above" / "upper side"; to load "load") or top loader is a specific design of washing machines or dryers . Unlike the front loaders that are more widespread in Europe, top loaders are not filled from the front, but from above. Most top loading washing machines do not have a viewing window. They usually require less space than a standard device, which is why a top loader is often used in smaller apartments or single households . The capacity is not necessarily less than with front loader models, 4.5 to 5.5 kg of dry laundry are common. Top loaders are usually only 40–50 cm wide - front loaders are usually 60 cm wide. You can add or remove items of laundry at any time.

It is often said that a top loader's bearings have a longer life than a front loader's because its drum is supported on both ends, not just one. This would load the bearings evenly. However, this depends on the type; According to the Miele company, their top loaders are only supported on one side and do not differ in service life from the front loader models. Repairs to top loaders are often more expensive, as the compact design takes more time. The market share of top loaders is higher in the new federal states than in the old ones. Top loaders are only sold in small numbers, so the devices are more expensive than comparable front loaders. The variety of models is smaller and technical innovations are often only offered with a delay of a few years.

The tub washing machines that were widespread outside Europe (formerly also in Germany) can also be referred to as top loaders.
