Topsmead State Forest is a state forest in the US state of Connecticut in the area of the parish of Litchfield . The site belonged to the summer residence of Edith Morton Chase , the daughter of Henry Sabin Chase . Her father was the first president of the Chase Brass and Copper Company . After her death in 1972, she bequeathed the house and lands to the State of Connecticut.
geography
The forest lies in the catchment area of the Naugatuck River . The Tudor-style farmhouse is open to the public during guided tours. English lawns and ornamental gardens belong to the house. Most of the 249 ha (615 acres) is used for extensive hay extraction to protect rare bird species.
Wildlife
On the grasslands nesting species such as bobolink and Savannah sparrow ( Passerculus sandwichensis ).
