Tor putitora occurs in the Himalayan region and in South Asia (from Iran in the west, Sri Lanka in the south to Thailand in the east). It lives in fast flowing waters, river basins and lakes. The fish is a popular fishing fish. It reaches a length of 2.75 m and a weight of 54 kg. The species is considered threatened. Important causes are the loss of habitat as a result of hydraulic engineering measures and overfishing . Tor putitora feeds on fish, zooplankton, insect larvae and aquatic plants. To spawn, the carp fish migrate from the lower reaches of the rivers up to their middle reaches. It usually spawns there when the rivers have less drainage. The juvenile fish stay between stones and at the edge of the water.
