Archway (Rossdhu)

The archway at the south entrance to Rossdhu House

The Rossdhu Archway spans the south approach to the Rossdhu House grounds . It is located about seven kilometers northeast of Helensburgh off the current A82 not far from the banks of Loch Lomond . Like Rossdhu House itself, the archway was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in 1971 as an individual monument in the highest category A. The design of the south entrance was carried out in the course of further construction work in the early 19th century, probably in 1817. In 1995 the structure was added to the list of Scottish monuments in danger. However, his condition is still classified as good to moderate.

description

The building is planned as a classic archway with a keystone . On either side of the passage are pairs of Tuscan columns that support the cornice . This is crowned by the iron and painted coat of arms of the Colquhoun clan , flanked by two soaring horses , who built Rossdhu House. The archway carries a two-winged, cast-iron gate. Two guard houses have been added symmetrically about 20 m away. These one-story, small buildings have a square floor plan and, like the archway, are made of ashlar. They are equipped with arched windows that are now walled up. At the edges of the building, pilasters support the cornice. The houses end with flat roofs. A cast iron fence spans the space between the archway and the two houses.
