The Torenkerk ( German  tower church ; also called Mariakerk ) is a late Gothic Evangelical-Uniate parish church in Gapinge (municipality of Veere , province of Zeeland ) in the Netherlands . It is considered to be the best preserved medieval village church on Walcheren .

history

The church was up to the Reformation of the Virgin Mary consecrated. The parish in Gapinge was created by the parish of the north minster in Middelburg before 1216. The stilts tower of Torenkerk with the distinctive octagonal top, on a Gothic spire rests, is the oldest part of the building. It was built in the first half of the 15th century. Today only the choir is used for worship purposes, it is separated from the adjoining nave by a small triumphal arch. The choir was built in the middle of the 15th century and was initially higher than the nave. Around 1500 this was brought to a level with the choir. During this construction work, the tower, adorned with rich Gothic brick ornamentation, was partially built into the nave. The sacred building is now part of the Veere parish of the Protestantse Kerk in Nederland .

organ

The organ was built in 1775 and sold to Serooskerke in 1866. In 1925 the organ was sold to Gapinge, where it was initially located in the Mozaiekkerk. In 1960 the instrument was restored and placed in the new church. The slider chest instrument has 10 stops on a manual (Ce 3 : Prestant 8 ', Holpijp 8', Prestant 4 ', Fluit 4', Nasard 3 ', Quint 3', Octaaf 2 ', Flageolet 2', Cornet V, Trompet 8th'). The pedal (C – c 0 ) is attached. The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
