Architecture and history

The tower from the seaside

The tower, built on a circular ground plan, was built in 1577. Its construction was ordered by the viceroy Miquel de Montcada in order to create a line of sight to two neighboring towers. However, a first vantage point in this area has been handed down as early as 1435. The entrance to the tower is four meters high. A few small steps are arranged far below the tower. Inside the tower was a place to sleep, a small kitchen and a water tank.

The tower served as a watch and signal tower and was part of a system that was supposed to warn of pirate attacks . The towers of the system were each manned by a tower guard. On August 31, 1580, Pere Llull and Andreu Mestre were appointed as the first tower guards. They received a pay of 75 pounds. In the event that the guards recognized enemy ships, a beacon was lit; Fresh wood during the day to give a smoke signal, dry wood at night to generate clearly visible flames. In this way, the neighboring towers erected within sight and the hinterland were alerted. In the hinterland, bells called men together for defense. The rest of the population sought protection in additional defensive structures.

Since 1985 the tower has been listed as a historical heritage of Spain (Patrimonio Histórico Español) under the number RI-51-0008460.
