Torre de l'Angel
The Torre de l'Àngel is a historic tower that was part of the ancient Arab wall of Valencia . It dates from the 11th century and is considered a cultural asset of special interest ( Bien de Interés Cultural ).
The semicircular tower was partially converted into a residential building. The original part comes from the wall that was built in the Taifa period . This wall was built with tapial and stone mortar and was more than 2 meters thick, which gives it great stability.
The tower is massive up to the top floor, where there was a vaulted chamber from which the city wall could be defended. There was a lower wall in front of the main wall. This porch was provided with a ditch that could be flooded in case of danger.
A few hundred meters away, on Carrer Mare Vella , is the gate of the same name. This gate was built in 1400 and broke through the Islamic Wall to connect the city to the Moorish Quarter, a neighborhood outside the walls where the Muslim population was concentrated after the Christian conquest of the city.
