Torsten Schäfer

Torsten Schäfer (born December 31, 1977 in Darmstadt ) is a German university professor, journalist and author. Since 2013 he has been teaching journalism with a focus on text production at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences .

Life

After working in nature conservation groups, Schäfer began in 1996 with lyrical publications, readings in schools and youth centers, and press work for the young socialists . He wrote for the Darmstädter Echo and then studied journalism and political science in Dortmund with semesters in Tours and Brussels. After a newspaper traineeship in Bielefeld, from 2002 he concentrated on environmental journalism and endangered species at Süddeutscher Zeitung and taz . Climate policy and overfishing were added as priorities.

After completing an EU master’s degree in Aachen, Schäfer worked in the online editorial team of Deutsche Welle and for Geo . At RWTH Aachen he wrote his doctorate in politics on EU reporting in regional newspapers. In 2008 he founded the blog euroreporter.de on environmental journalism, nature topics and literary experiments. In 2009 Schäfer went to Hamburg as an editor for the international Geo edition. He also blogged and, according to his own proposal, helped to build the “Journalism and Sustainability” certificate at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg . In 2013 he moved to Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, where he teaches as a journalism professor. He also writes travel and nature reports, essays and poems.

Torsten Schäfer is married and has three children.

Research and Teaching

Torsten Schäfer's main areas of work are text theory (especially portraits, interviews and reports), journalistic storytelling, European and international reporting as well as environmental and travel journalism. In 2013 Torsten Schäfer set up the internet portal Green Journalism together with Peter Seeger at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences , which he is editorially responsible for.
