The St. Wendel bus shelters (today TourRondo St. Wendel ) is a listed building at the train station in the Saarland city of St. Wendel .

history

St. Wendel station, which opened in 1860, was rebuilt in 1954 after being destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in parts from 1966 to 1970. The bus waiting hall was built in 1956 according to plans by the construction department of the Saarland railways . It was converted into a restaurant in 1970 and the interior was rebuilt. A planned demolition of the restaurant in the course of the redesign of the area around the station in the 1990s was not implemented. The building, which had been vacant for a long time, was renovated in 2010 and converted into a service center for Saar-Pfalz-Bus and Deutsche Bahn .

architecture

The two-storey pavilion building was built on a semi-oval floor plan. It is covered by a curved and bent flat roof with a large overhang. The central design element of the facade are the vertical concrete buttresses, which are slightly raised upwards. Curved parapet areas with vertical plaster corrugation visually separate the floors. The lower storey sinks slightly into the ground. The recessed windows are covered by vertical concrete slats. The upper floor is glazed between the concrete struts. The upper floor can be entered at ground level via the platform. The luggage check-in was originally located in the basement and a waiting room with a bar on the upper floor. From the mid-1970s, a restaurant with a kiosk was housed on the upper floor and a public toilet in the basement.

The waiting hall is a rare example of 1950s architecture in the region and is therefore a listed building. In 2013 the renovated building received the Saarland Monument Preservation Award.
