Toy Soldiers is an action - strategy game for the Xbox 360 and Windows , developed by Signal Studios and published by Microsoft Studios . It combines elements of real-time strategy games , action games and tower defense games in the scenario of the First World War .

Gameplay

In Toy Soldiers, the player controls an army of miniature toy soldiers in a limited diorama landscape made of wood and plastic. Supernaturally large scenes form the horizon, for example a child's room or a library, and one can often see individual, huge objects such as lamps and other pieces of furniture, which gives the impression of actually commanding small toy soldiers. Usually the player controls a base at one end of the field. In tower defense style, increasing waves of various types of opponents pour towards your own fortifications at regular intervals. The player can set up various defensive structures such as howitzers , mortars and machine-gun nests on given construction sites and must fend off the waves. The player receives money for repelled units, which he can then use to build stronger defenses. While all units are usually controlled by the AI , the player can and must often take control of individual units in the third-person perspective in order to win the game. The game includes over 50 different units, including various tanks and planes. To keep the game family-friendly, enemies hit break or explode into individual plastic pieces without showing any blood.

After the release, two more DLC packages were published, which added more content to the game for little money.

The Kaiser's Battle

The Kaiser's Battle was the first add-on package available. It expands the game to include French units, a French mini campaign consisting of three single player levels including the boss opponent “ K-Wagen ”, two new multiplayer maps, a new survival map and three new achievements.

Invasion!

The second package, Invasion! , expands the game with another mini campaign including the final boss "RoboBob", two new multiplayer maps, a new survival map and three new achievements. In this package, the player controls the German army and has to defend himself against British secret weapons, including flying saucers.

The reviews of both versions, both for Windows and for the Xbox 360, were largely positive. Toy Soldiers was praised for the extraordinary setting and the entertaining and action-packed gameplay. The missing story and the mediocre AI were criticized. The PC version was rated worse on average, which is due to the lack of multiplayer mode.

"Motivating mixture of tower defense and action with toy flair, which despite the small selection of cards is not only a lot of fun solo but also for two."
