The trachytes Hill ( English for Trachyt -Hügel ) is a 470 m high hill on the west side of the Antarctic Ross Island . It rises on the ice-free lower slopes of Mount Bird south of Shell Glacier .
Participants in a 1958-1959 campaign as part of the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition mapped the area and named the mound after the rock it is made of.
