The Ross Archipelago on the western edge of the Antarctic Ross Sea consists of a group of islands in the Ross Ice Shelf . By far the largest island in the archipelago ( main island ) is Ross Island with two research stations that are inhabited all year round . The region forms the eastern and southern borders of McMurdo Sound .
The northernmost island is Beaufort Island , and to the south are Ross Island, the four Dellbridge Islands , Black Island and White Island . Frank Debenham's classic 1923 report, The Physiography of the Ross Archipelago , still counted Brown Island , now known as the Brown Peninsula , among the islands of the archipelago.
