Tracton Abbey ( Irish Mainistir Bán , Latin Albus tractus ) is a former Cistercian abbey in County Cork in what is now the Republic of Ireland . It was located in the south of the island on the coast of what is now County Cork on a stream that flows into Ringabella Bay, in the village of Tracton Parish, not far from Kinsale .
history
The monastery was founded in 1225 at the request of Odo de Barry in 1222 and 1223 and was manned by monks from Whitland Abbey (Alba Landa) in Wales . So it belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . From 1483 only members of the de Barry family became abbot. The monastery experienced its decline in the 15th century. It was probably left around 1541 by the remaining monks. In 1568 his estates were transferred to Henry Gylford and in the early 17th century they came to Thomas Daunt of Gloucestershire, whose family built a new house. The abbey buildings fell into disrepair since 1639. A Protestant church was built in 1817 on the site of the now completely dilapidated abbey.
