As support and guide elements, idlers are an essential part of belt conveyor systems. A conveyor belt running endlessly between a head and tail drum must be supported. This support of the (above) loaded upper run and the (lower) returned lower run of a belt conveyor system is provided by support rollers, in that these produce rolling contact between the supporting frame and the belt conveyor belt.

In the upper run, a trough shape is formed by at least 3 support rollers in which the conveyed goods are safely deposited for transport. In the lower run, the belt either rests on a continuous support roller or is guided by two V-shaped support rollers.

Depending on the throughput for the conveyed goods to be transported , there is a certain belt width and a required conveying speed . This ultimately results in the different dimensions of the support rollers in terms of length and diameter. The roll lengths depend on the width of the belt used. The diameters depend on the conveyor speed and range from 63.5 mm for slow-running conveyor systems to 219 mm for high-speed systems. However, the speed of the idlers in nominal operation of a system should not be more than 650 1 / min.

Several supporting rollers that are movably linked to one another are called a garland. The mounting of garlands and individual idlers takes place in roller stations within the supporting structure of a conveyor line.

The support rollers used usually have a cylindrical shape and consist of steel tubes with welded-in sheet metal or pressed-in cast caps as support roller bases with integrated bearing holders. With the roller bearings used, the internal axis is guided, which in turn is shifted in the supporting structure.

Support rollers are therefore always provided with a so-called "inner bearing", i. H. the roller bearings are located inside the idler roller and the idler roller always rotates relative to the axis.

In different designs, support rollers can be made of steel or plastic , for example , and can also be provided with a coating.

The running properties of a support roller are primarily influenced by the manufacturing tolerances of the individual component components, the lubricants used for the bearings and the wear and tear on the roller.

The specifications for standard rollers are given in DIN 15207 ( continuous conveyor - support rollers for belt conveyors - main dimensions of the support rollers) and in DIN 22112 parts 1 to 3 (belt conveyors for underground coal mining - support rollers). Another recommendation about the design of support rollers and their installation in the supporting structure is given by guideline VDI 2341 (Belt Conveyors for Bulk Goods - Support Rollers and Support Roller Spacing).
