history

The company was founded in 1961 by Keith Larkin and Courtney Graham. A short time later they marketed their first headset: the MS50. The MS50 was adopted by United Airlines and became the standard in the aircraft industry. In 1962, the MS50 into the helmet one was NASA - Astronaut integrated and Plantronics was one of the few mentioned by name NASA suppliers. In 1964 Plantronics acquired the privilege of supplying the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) with lightweight headsets. The astronaut Neil Armstrong , who was the first person to walk on the moon , transmitted the first words from the moon on July 20, 1969 via a Plantronics headset.

In addition to corded business headsets, some with integrated amplifiers and noise suppression systems , which are mainly used in call centers , Plantronics also produces DECT headsets for office environments as well as Bluetooth headsets for mobile phones and headsets for computers (some with USB connection), which are especially intended for computer games and internet telephony .

Plantronics is one of the first supporters of the FIDO Alliance , which has been developing the Universal Second Factor (U2F) industry standard for generally applicable two-factor authentication since 2013 .

At CeBIT 2015 , Plantronics presented the Blackwire 725 USB headset with active noise canceling technology, followed a little later by the Voyager Focus UC headset, which uses active noise canceling technology and wireless transmission via Bluetooth for calls both with a USB Dongle and simultaneously with a smartphone (multipoint). In 2016 the BackBeat Pro 2 and the BackBeat Pro 2 Special Edition (SE) with NFC pairing were launched. In 2017, the Voyager 8200 UC was the first business headset without a microphone boom, but with six integrated microphones.

In August 2018, the acquisition of competitor Polycom for $ 2 billion was completed.
