The Tranquility Base , also Latin Statio Tranquillitatis , is the landing point of the first manned lunar module in Mare Tranquillitatis .

During the first manned moon landing as part of the Apollo 11 mission, the lunar module "Eagle" touched down on July 20, 1969 at 8:17 pm GMT in the southwestern plain of a lunar sea , known by astronomers as Mare Tranquillitatis, "Sea of rest ", is performed. After touchdown, Neil Armstrong reported the successful landing with the words “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed. ”(“ Houston (ground control), here Tranquility station, the eagle has landed ”).

In honor of this mission, the International Astronomical Union officially added the name "Tranquility Base" to the lunar maps, where it is listed under its Latin equivalent Statio Tranquillitatis , in line with the details on the lunar map, which are consistently named with Latin names.

The area around the landing site is also considered to be the type locality of the three minerals armalcolite , pyroxferroit and tranquilityite , as these were first discovered in the rock samples collected from there.

Three small moon craters north of the landing site were named Aldrin , Collins and Armstrong after the members of the mission .
