Collins is a small impact crater in the southern part of Mare Tranquillitatis , east of Sabine crater . It is located about 25 kilometers north of the Apollo 11 landing site . The landing site of the lunar probe Surveyor 5 is 15 kilometers in a west-northwest direction.
Named for Michael Collins , the pilot of the Columbia Command Module of the Apollo 11 mission, it is the middle in a series of three craters named in honor of the Apollo 11 crew members.
Before the renaming by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), he served as Sabine D known.
