TransUnion is an American financial services provider, in addition to Equifax and Experian to the "Big Three" credit reporting agencies one in the United States. TransUnion has economically relevant data on over 500 million private individuals and companies. The company was founded in 1968 as a holding company for Union Tank Car Company (UTLX), a freight car leasing company . In the following year, TransUnion entered credit reporting with the takeover of the Credit Bureau of Cook County (CBCC). At that time, CBCC held creditworthiness data on 3.6 million index cards. This branch of business was further expanded in the following decades. Since 1988, the entire United States has been covered by TransUnion's services. In 1981, TransUnion was taken over by the Marmon Group , which sold the finance division to Madison Dearborn Partners in the 1990s . In June 2015, TransUnion went public in New York.

There have been several legal proceedings against TransUnion in the past for incorrect records of individual creditworthiness that were not corrected in a timely manner. TransUnion was also criticized for redirecting visitors to the website of its Central American division to pages that attempted to download malware onto visitors' computers.
