Transavia PL-12 Airtruks

Transavia Corporation Pty Ltd was founded in 1965 as a subsidiary of Transfield NSW Pty Ltd to build agricultural aircraft.

history

The forerunner of the Bennett Airtruck was designed in New Zealand by Luigi Pellarini and first flew in 1956. It was the Kingsford Smith PL.7 agricultural aircraft . Parts from disused North American Harvards were used in the construction , along with an Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah radial engine. Two advanced agricultural aircraft, PL-11 AirTruck were also in New Zealand in the early 1960s by Bennett Aviation and later by Waitomo Aircraft Ltd built.

The basic design was adopted and improved by Transavia in 1965, so that the end result was the Transavia PL-12 Airtruk . The PL-12 had an unconventional but functional design, which made it ideal for use in agriculture. Transavia launched a revised version in 1981, the PL-12-300 "Skyfarmer" with a reinforced upper fuselage and a larger cockpit. Another, the last version, was the PL-12-400 which was powered by a Lycoming IO-720 piston engine with 400 hp. Transavia produced a total of 119 Airtruks. Many are still in use today.
