Lycoming O-720 is the name of a piston aircraft engine family from the US manufacturer Lycoming . All engines in this series are air-cooled 4-stroke boxer engines , have eight cylinders, a bore of 130.2 mm with a stroke of 111.1 mm. The displacement is thus 11,834 cm³. The engine was first registered in 1961 and is still in production today. It has an injection system as standard (code letter I in the engine designation). One variant was equipped with a turbocharger (code letter T ). A reduction gear is not provided. The mean time between overhaul is 1800 hours, when used in agricultural aircraft it is 1200 hours. Other engines from the manufacturer with the same bore and stroke are the four-cylinder Lycoming O-360 and the six-cylinder Lycoming O-540 .

variants

  • IO-720: engine 276 kW (375 hp) at 2500 min -1 bis 294 kW (400 hp) at 2650 min -1 performance. The engine received approval on October 15, 1961 and was used, for example, on the Piper PA-36 . The compression is 8.7: 1. AVGAS is mandatory as fuel .
  • TIO-720: Turbo-charged variant with 294–346 kW (400–470 hp), which was intended for the Piper PA-35 . When the flight tests showed that 382 kW (520 hp) engine power was required for the approval of the PA-35, further development was discontinued.
