Lycoming O-340 is a series of four-cylinder boxer engines with carburettors for mixture preparation , which was built by the US manufacturer Lycoming during the mid-1950s.
development and construction
The O-340 was specially developed for the Temco D-16 . Jack Riley, the designer of the Temco D-16, wanted an improved version of the Lycoming O-320 with higher performance to give the aircraft a higher service ceiling in the event of an engine failure . Since the Lycoming O-360 was still at the beginning of several years of development, Lycoming modified the O-320. The engine got longer cylinders , a crankcase with a longer stroke to increase the displacement and redesigned connecting rods . These changes resulted in a higher compression of 8.5: 1 and increased the rated power from the 150 hp (110 kW ) of the O-320 to 170 hp (125 kW). The engine was later used in many aircraft and helicopters and also in kit aircraft.
The O-340 series covers a power range from 160 HP (118 kW) to 170 HP (125 kW). All models have a displacement of 5580 cm³ and air-cooled cylinder heads .
The first engine in the series received its type certification on July 20, 1954. All models are certified for both tractor and pusher configurations .
