Tractor configuration

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cessna 172 , an aircraft with a tractor configuration.

The tractor configuration describes a drive design in which the propellers are located in front of the engine . This can be the case with all means of transport that are operated with propeller (s) ( aircraft , hovercraft , airships, etc.). Today it is the most common drive design. Vehicles that are equipped with the tractor configuration are also called tractors .

In the context of open rotor turbofan engines, a puller configuration is sometimes used instead of a tractor .

advantages

The tractor configuration offers the following advantages for aircraft :

  • Because the drive is attached to the very front of the aircraft in this design, the aircraft is more stable.
  • The fact that the drive is at the front and therefore within sight of the pilot means that he can become more quickly aware of possible engine problems such as an oil leak or smoke development.
