The Lycoming IO-390 is a four-cylinder boxer engine for small aircraft manufactured by the US company Lycoming . Since there is no version with a carburetor that would have the designation O-390, the IO-390 is the basic model.
construction and development
The engine was originally conceived as the IO-400-X in the 1970s, but the project has been discontinued.
The motors of the IO-390 series (factory designation IO-390-X) produce between 200 HP (147 kW ) and 215 HP (158 kW). The IO-390 was developed from the IO-360 by using the larger cylinders of the IO-580 . It has improved air intake, roller tappets and a slick start ignition. The engine has a fuel injection system that measures the amount of fuel in relation to the air flow through the intake system and gasifies the fuel in the intake manifold. The engine capacity is 6390 cm³. The cylinder heads are air-cooled .
The IO-390 was presented for the first time at the EAA AirVenture 2002. The recommended mean time between overhaul is 2000 hours.
Before the engine received its type certification , it was first marketed through Thunderbolt Engines - Lycoming's custom-built subsidiary - and was only available for non-type-certified aircraft during that time. The IO-390 received its FAR Part 33 approval on March 30, 2009.
In January 2009, the base price for the IO-390-EXP was 32,650 US dollars .
In November 2009, Lycoming announced that it is the supplemental type approval of the Federal Aviation Administration had received to the Lycoming O-360 engines in the Mooney M20E, M20F and M20J with new or refurbished IO-390-A3A6 engines replaced. Furthermore, Commander Aircraft received a supplementary type certificate for the Rockwell Commander 112 B with MTV-12-B / 188-59b propellers.
