Transcription factor IIF

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Transcription factor IIF (TFIIF) is a protein complex in the cell nucleus of vertebrate animals that is essential for the initiation of the transcription of all genes . In particular, TFIIF binds to RNA polymerase  II and stabilizes the TFIID - TFIIA - TFIIB complex, and thus contributes to the precise positioning of the pre-initiation complex at the beginning of the gene. Further functions of TFIIF during the elongation phase are now known.

TFIIF consists of two subunits (RAP74, RAP30) with 517 and 249 amino acids. The second subunit has helicase activity ( EC  3.6.1.- ). RAP74 binds to FCP1 , which is necessary for the recycling of the polymerase. RAP74 also interacts with TAF6 and RAP30 with HTATSF1 as well as with GPBP1 .
