Percutaneously
The adjective percutaneous (from the Latin per for 'through' and cutis for 'skin'; meaning 'through the [healthy] skin ') is a medical term that indicates the way through or over the skin.
It describes the way in which medication , but also pollutants and chemicals , are absorbed into the body or the approach used in medical procedures.
Synonymously, transdermal or transcutaneous ( transcutaneous ) are used.
- Suitable medicaments are absorbed percutaneously in the case of cutaneous application.
- Some poisons and many chemicals (such as mercaptoethanol and acetonitrile ) cause damage through percutaneous absorption .
- Cannulas , sometimes also catheters , are inserted percutaneously.
- A drain can be inserted percutaneously without surgery , which allows wound secretions or pus to drain away.
- Pathogens or parasites such as roundworms can penetrate the skin, which can lead to percutaneous infection.
