Transverse resection

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A transverse resection is the removal of the transverse colon ( colon transversum ).

Indications

The transverse resection can be necessary in colorectal cancer or in a mesenteric infarction .

Operational extent

In principle, only the transverse colon is removed . In the case of a malignant tumor, the greater omentum and its vessels are removed. The lymph drains along the lymph nodes around the arteria colica media up to the exit of the arteria mesenterica superior from the aorta. If the Riolan's anastomosis is insufficient, it may also be necessary to remove the left colonic bend. The transverse resection is now rarely performed. Extended hemicolectomy is now often recommended for colon cancer .
