Berryville Trappist Abbey
The Trappist Abbey Berryville (Latin Abbatia Beatae Mariae de Sancta Cruce ; English Our Lady of the Holy Cross Abbey ) has been an American monastery in Berryville, Clarke County (Virginia) , Diocese of Arlington , since 1950 .
history
The Trappist Spencer Abbey , which in 1950 was unable to accommodate all homeless monks after the fire at Our Lady of the Valley Abbey in Rhode Island , was founded that same year on the Shenandoah River in Berryville, east of Winchester (Virginia) , 90 kilometers west of Washington, DC , the daughter monastery Our Lady of the Holy Cross ("Heiligenkreuz"), which was elevated to an abbey in 1958 .
