The Trappist Monastery of Carrizo has been a monastery since 1176, first of the Cistercian women , since 1955 of the Trappist women in Carrizo de La Ribera, Province of León , Spain .

history

Countess Estefanía Ramírez († 1183) became a widow in the nunnery of Santa María de la Asunción in Carrizo (20 km west of León , in the center of town), which was founded with her husband in 1176. After her death, her daughter was until 1206 the first regular abbess. From 1616 the abbesses were elected for three years. In 1868 the convent had to leave the monastery and find accommodation in the Premonstratensian monastery of Santa María de la Asunción in Villoria de Órbigo (in Villarejo de Órbigo, Province of León) (15 km to the south) , but was able to return in 1871. From 1871 to 1915 the monastery was downgraded to the rank of a priory, and since then it has been an abbey again. Under Abbess María del Tránsito Pérez Rodriguez (1929-1959), the convent was incorporated into the Trappist Order (OCSO) in 1955. The chapter house of the monastery, which has been a listed building since 1974, has a Mudéjares- style ceiling.
