Trappist convent of Santa Ana (Ávila)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Trappist convent of Santa Ana in Ávila is a nunnery of the Cistercian order of strict observance .

In the 13th century there was a monastery under the patronage of St. Clement near Ávila on the Adaja river . In 1331, the then bishop of Ávila made a donation to provide new accommodation for the nuns of the ruined monastery of San Clemente. The complex of buildings known today as Real Monasterio de Santa Ana (Ávila) was built . The monastery community grew in the 16th century, also through the addition of other monasteries. The buildings were therefore completely rebuilt and expanded. During the period of disamortization in Spain in the first half of the 19th century, the number of nuns was so great that the monastery was not closed. However, the expropriation of a large part of the land meant that hardly any funds could be raised for the maintenance of the building. In 1954 the convent was incorporated into the Trappist Order (OCSO). The building complex of the Monasterio de Santa Ana was considerably too large in relation to the number of nuns and could not be adequately maintained by the community. Therefore, a new monastery building outside the city of Ávila was planned.

In June 1976 the foundation stone for a new monastery was laid. In October 1978 the new monastery building was occupied. Numerous works of art from the old monastery building found a new use. The mortal remains of the Venerable Servant of God María Vela y Cueto were also reburied. The Christian mystic , born in 1561, was in the monastery from 1576 until her death on September 25, 1617 and was not buried in the cloister, but in the chapel of Our Lady of Sonsoles. The former monastery building was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1982 , bought by the Autonomous Community of Castile and León and secularized in 1985 .

In 2014 the long-time abbess Pilar Cubillo Pérez died after 74 years in the monastery (* 1923, entered 1940, professed 1945, abbess 1968–1998).
