The black tetra ( Gymnocorymbus ternetzi ) is a freshwater fish from the middle South America and comes into the flow systems of the Rio Paraguay and Rio Guaporé in Bolivia and in the central Rio Parana in Argentina before. The species was described in 1895 by the British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger and named after C. Ternetz, who first caught the fish.

features

Black charcoal tetra are high-backed, strongly flattened on the sides and up to 5.5 cm long, they are peaceful schooling fish. Males stay smaller. The fish are silvery and show two deep black, broad transverse bands in the front half of the body, the first directly behind the gill cover, the second at the level of the attachment of the dorsal fin. Another vertical band runs through the eye. The rear half of the body, dorsal, anal and adipose fin are deep black in younger fish. The ventral and caudal fins are light-colored. The black color fades with age and turns gray, usually faster in females than in males.

Aquaristics

The black charcoal tetra was introduced to Europe as an aquarium fish in 1935 and is now part of the standard range of pet supplies. Breeding is not very difficult, but it does require some preparation. There is also a cultivated form with elongated fins. A golden cultivated form can also be found. The fish are quite good eaters and can even swallow small flies.
