Traumhäuser is an architectural film format that is produced by BR Fernsehen in ten-part seasons and has been broadcast since 2006.
In the first three seasons of the architecture film series, outstanding single-family houses in Bavaria are presented, which represent a high-quality, sophisticated building culture. At the same time, the projects selected by an expert jury illustrate building policy issues such as ecological building, building in existing buildings, building in the city or dealing with difficult building sites.
The protagonists of the series are architects and builders who dare to try something new without disregarding tradition and environment. The individual wishes of the client as well as topographical, building law, ecological and financial specifications from the architect are implemented in a demanding and practical overall concept. The creation of the dream houses is documented from the planning to the move in of the building owners.
The third season only shows houses that meet the criteria of ecological construction . The projects range from the passive house , which reinterprets the traditional Chiemgau farm, to a 40-KfW Bauhaus near Augsburg, an environmentally friendly renovated old homestead near Regensburg or a modern, energetically completely self-sufficient suburban villa.
The thematic focus of the fourth season is on new forms of living and living models for the future. The films, in which construction projects such as multi-generation houses , living in old age, building owners' communities and a building project for the disabled are documented, show solutions for the major societal challenges of the coming decades ( demographic change , breaking up of classic family structures).
Currently (as of the beginning of 2016) the fifth season is running in repetition.
As part of the 2010 BDA award ceremony, the Association of German Architects honored outstanding buildings from all over Bavaria. In almost all of the categories relevant to the "single-family house" design, houses that the BR had already discovered for the architectural film series Traumhäuser won before they were realized .
