A trdelník is a traditional pastry that comes from Skalica in Slovakia . It is in the shape of a roll as it is baked on sticks. It has an inside diameter of 3–5 cm, an outside diameter of 6–10 cm, is coated with beaten egg white and sprinkled with chopped walnuts, almonds or apricot kernels.

history

In the 18th century, the retired Count József Gvadányi hired a cook from Transylvania . He brought the recipe, which is similar to the Hungarian Kürtőskalács ( Baumstriezel ) and is a kind of tree cake , with him to Skalica.

etymology

The name is derived from trdlo "wooden peg".

Manufacturing

The dough is rolled up on the bars. Thereafter, it is an open hearth laid and subsequently coated with sugar and Nussraspeln, and sprinkled after baking with a mixture of powder and vanilla sugar. After the pastry has cooled down, it is cut into slices.
