history

The "Community of the Magi" (Compagnia dei Tre Re) founded in 1580 was the client of the church in Via Santa Maria Montevergini in the Capo district . After an objection by the architect Francesco Ferrigno , it was built in its present form in the middle of the 18th century on the foundations of the church of San Giorgio Lo Xeri from 1545. It was not until 1997 that the severe war damage from 1943 was repaired on the occasion of the "Itinerari Serpottiani", an exhibition project about the sculptor family Serpotta .

Procopio Serpotta , his son Gian Maria and his collaborators Gaspare Firriolo and Giacomo Guastella created allegorical figures and the stucco decoration of the church based on designs by Francesco Ferrigno .

From Vito D'Anna that originate ceiling fresco "Triumph of the Holy. Three Kings" and frescoes on the apse walls "baptism of Hamilkar" and "Martyrdom of Belshazzar" (1751/52). The panel painting "Adoration of the Magi" by Gioacchino Martorana is now in the Diocesan Museum of Palermo and a painting with the same content, which Simone de Wrobeck painted in 1585, came to the Castello Ursino in Catania .
