width

  • The width of the flight of stairs is measured directly above the step between the stringers. This dimension is not to be equated with the usable stair flight width.
    • The usable staircase width is measured at the height of the handrail between the surface of the staircase wall and the inner edge of the handrail or between the handrails
    • The usable stair flight width for necessary stairs in residential buildings with up to two apartments is 80 to 90 cm.

    • In the Commercial Building Ordinance, a usable stairway width of at least 2.00 m and a maximum of 2.50 m is specified.
    • The garage ordinance requires a usable flight of stairs of 1.00 m.
