John Trevor Stuart , called Trevor, (born January 29, 1929 ) is a British applied mathematician who deals with theoretical hydrodynamics , hydrodynamic stability and nonlinear partial differential equations.

Stuart studied at Imperial College London with his doctorate in 1953 (Stability of viscous motion for finite disturbances) and then spent several years in the aeronautics department of the National Physical Laboratory before returning to Imperial College. In 1966 he became a professor of theoretical hydrodynamics there. 1974 to 1979 and 1983 to 1986 he headed the mathematics faculty. From 1990 to 1993 he was Dean of the Royal College of Science.

In 1984 he received the Senior Whitehead Prize and in 1985 the Otto Laporte Prize . He is a Fellow of the Royal Society (1974) and an honorary doctorate from Brown University and the University of East Anglia .

He is editor of the Biographical Memoirs of the Fellows of the Royal Society.
