Triberga borg ( German  Burg von Triberga ) is a prehistoric castle on the Swedish island of Öland in the Baltic Sea .

location

The castle complex , which has only survived in remains, is located west of the village of Triberga , in the barren landscape of the Stora Alvaret in the southeastern part of the island. Further east is the Triberga-Alby-mosse bog .

investment

In its layout and function, Triberga is similar to the reconstructed Eketorp Castle , which lies to the south. However, Triberga borg is relatively small with an inner diameter of about 60 meters and an outer diameter of 110 meters. The outer collapsed wall is now six to nine meters thick. It is relatively well preserved up to a height of about two meters. The original height should have been four to five meters. The gate is on the southeast side.

In the past, the castle probably had a meaning in connection with an old path that passed here over the Stora Alvaret towards Resmo , which today only exists in parts.

meaning

The importance of fortifications or refuge has been given to systems all over Europe, the characteristic of which is the round shape and, as always, a demarcation from the surrounding area. Sweden's forebears occur only in the area of the pagan Svear and in such a number (1100) that their fortificative classification is untenable. Some of these systems are tiny and strategically unsustainable (lack of water).

Tombs

There are several prehistoric tombs outside the castle. There are eleven stone settings and a burial ground over a length of 350 meters. There is also a ring with a diameter of 31 meters and a height of 1.50 meters.
