Trichoblast

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Trichoblasts are specialized cells of the rhizodermis (root skin) of the plants, which develop the hairs in young, growing roots . The cells of the rhizodermis that do not form root hairs are called atrichoblasts . In monocots and water lily plants trichoblasts and cells and atrichoblast cells are arranged in a regular pattern.

Trichoblasts were first observed in 1868 by Carl Wilhelm von Nägeli and Hubert Leitgeb , the term was coined in 1904 by Robert Greenleaf Leavitt .
