The so-called Trier court picture was painted in 1589 on behalf of Elector Johann VII von Schönenberg . On the inside there is a picture of justice depicting heavenly and earthly justice, while the side panels show the places and monasteries that were then subject to Trier jurisdiction. Many of these representations contain the very first images of these places.

history

In the picture itself the reason for its creation is explained in a short inscription: "Out of the most noble in God Vatter Fürsten and Hern Hern lohansen Ertzbischoffen zu Trier vnd Churfursten, this panel is from an old painting so hiebeuorn in the previous court house, painted and here has been decreed, happening the 1st decem [bris] A [nno] 1589. " It is based on an older painting in the former court house (Jakobstrasse 10, not preserved), which has not been preserved.

After Kurtrier was abolished in the course of the French Revolution, the painting was auctioned off to a private collector. After changing visits to the museum, it has been in the Simeonstift Museum since the Second World War (in the room next to the former dormitory, together with the original of the Trier market cross ). It was restored after the war.
