The Trio Islands ( Māori Te Kuru or after the main island Kuru Pongi ) are a group of three islands in the Tasman Sea . They are located north of New Zealand's South Island , about 15 km west of D'Urville Island . Administratively they belong to the Marlborough District . The Rangitoto Islands are 15 km north, the Chetwode Islands 20 km southeast.

In addition to the 86 m high, approximately 900 × 1200 m measuring main island Kurupongi Island, the group consists of a 24 m high islet 1 km north and another small rock island about 1 km south.

The island was designated as a nature reserve with the Wildlife Sanctuary (Trio Islands) Order 1965 under the Wildlife Act 1953 .
