Trio Lescano (1938)

The Trio Lescano was a vocal trio that was very popular in Italy between 1935 and 1943. It was one of the first girl groups in Europe and consisted of the sisters Alexandrina Eveline Leschan called Sandra (born July 29, 1910 in Gouda, † February 1, 1987 in Fidenza), Judik Leschan (born August 8, 1913 - August 8 2007) and Katharina Matje Leschan called Kitty (born November 23, 1919 in Aiax, † 1965 in Caracas). Their names were Italianized into Alessandra, Giuditta and Caterinetta (Caterina) Lescano.

Life

The father was a Hungarian circus artist, the mother a Dutch operetta singer from a family of musicians of Jewish descent. After touring in Europe, Syria and Lebanon, when they first called themselves The Sunday Girls , success came in Italy, where the sisters settled and quickly became the most popular singers of the Mussolini era. In November 1943, the trio was arrested during a concert in a Genoese theater and jailed for alleged espionage. Italian enemies of Jews had constructed the absurd accusation that the singing sisters had transmitted encrypted secret messages to the enemy in their songs during a radio broadcast. In June 1946 the youngest sister left the trio and was replaced by the 21-year-old Maria Bria. The newly formed trio continued to sing in South America from 1947 until it broke up in 1952.

In 2008, a documentary film Tulip Time, the rise and fall of Trio Lescano was released about the trio. The film was shown for the first time at the Jewish Film Festival in San Francisco.

In 2010, the two-part TV series Die Swingmädchen ( Le Ragazze dello Swing ) was directed by Maurizio Zaccaro . It was broadcast on the Franco-German TV channel arte on October 19, 2012 and repeated in December 2013.
