action
Towards the end of the 1930s, the three Dutch sisters Alexandra, Judith and Kitty Leschan emigrate to Italy with their Jewish mother Eva De Leeuwe. The two older sisters are soon engaged as dancers by the Neapolitan minor artist Gennaro Fiore. At the suggestion of her mother, Fiore forms a vocal trio out of the three girls. The girls' talent is soon recognized by the impresario Pier Maria Canapone, who signs the girls. Italian radio initially rejects the trio because of their origins, but changes its mind when another music company offers the trio an exclusive contract. The girls' Dutch surname, Leschan, is changed to the Italianized Lescano. The three now appear under the name Trio Lescano .
With the rise of fascism in Italy, Canapone tries to convince the girls to use their popularity for the propaganda of the regime. After the Italian race laws were promulgated in 1938, they were declared Jewish because of their Jewish mother. Mistrust and accusations soon arise because of their Jewish origins. While performing in Genoa , the Italian Gestapo arrested them on charges of hiding encrypted messages in their songs to the American armed forces. They will be released soon, but their music will no longer be allowed to air.
Alexandra uses her relationship with her former lover Parisi, who has since made a career under the fascists, to free her friend, the Jewish pianist Funaro. She also asks for the release of her former boss Venezia. While Venezia is being released, Funaro is being evacuated. After the war, the two older sisters decide to travel to South America and continue their careers there. The younger sister Kitty stays in Italy and marries her boyfriend there.
