Tritonal

Tritonal is a military explosive that was first used in World War II .

The silver-colored, solid mixture consists of 80% TNT and 20% grained aluminum . The density is 1.73 g / cm³; the other properties such as melting point and solubility are generally similar to those of TNT. The aluminum additive increases the explosive force (fire and gas hammer effect) of the TNT by increasing the combustion temperature and thus increasing the pressure wave. The content of TNT and aluminum can be determined by dissolving out the nitro compound with benzene and weighing the remaining aluminum residue.

The most important areas of application for this explosive are aerial bombs , such as the GBU-43 / B Massive Ordnance Air Blast or Mark 82 . Furthermore, Tritonal is also used to destroy phosgene due to the great heat it generates .
