A running board is an automobile add-on part that is attached as a narrow - not fold-out - step under the side doors of a vehicle. It makes it easier to get started, especially with tall vehicles such as all-terrain vehicles and pickup trucks. It is typical of oldtimers, which had much more ground clearance than today's vehicles, and is now also used as a fashionable decorative part on vehicles that actually do not need it.

The running boards could also be equipped with corrugations and shoe scrapers for sole cleaning.

Running boards are also sometimes used to stand on while a vehicle is in motion.

Running boards were also sometimes installed on some historic carriages or trams .
