Troll monk

The Troll Monk is a former monastery building of the lay brotherhood of the Alexians (also known as Celliten, Lollarden, Troll Brothers ) in the old town of Goslar . It is the southwest corner house of the connecting street of the same name from Glockengießerstraße to An der Abzucht street .

history

The branch is only documented in 1482, at the same time as the Alexian monastery in Braunschweig . The choice of location is likely to be related to the poor cemetery, which was then in the immediate vicinity, as the brotherhood was dedicated to caring for the physically and mentally seriously ill, accompanying the dying and condemned to death as well as the last escort of the destitute deceased.

Already in 1527 the brotherhood house was apparently largely empty, because at that time the Johanniter from the Holy Sepulcher Monastery, which was destroyed in the Goslar riots in 1527 , found temporary accommodation here.

In 1550 the house went into private ownership. In 1609 the city of Goslar bought it and used it a. a. as a prison. In 1860 the Kingdom of Hanover set up barracks here. In 1898 the house was again privately owned and now houses a restaurant.
