Henry Krystal

Henry Krystal (born April 22, 1925 in Sosnowiec as Henyek Krysztal , † October 8, 2015 in Bloomfield Hills ) was an American specialist in psychiatry and Holocaust survivor .

Life

Henry Krystal grew up in Sosnowiec, Poland, as the son of an accountant. He attended the Zionist Gymnasium there. After the city was conquered by the German Reich , he was separated from his family in 1942 and recruited into forced labor .

From 1942 to 1945 he did forced labor mainly for Siemens at various locations. Some of these stations were the Sachsenhausen concentration camp , the Birkenau concentration camp , the Auschwitz concentration camp and Berlin-Siemensstadt .

After the war he attended the Goethe University in Frankfurt . In 1947 he emigrated to the United States and lived with relatives in Detroit .

He continued his medical studies at Wayne State University , where he graduated in 1950.

He died on October 8, 2015 of complications from his Alzheimer's disease . He was the father of Yale Professor John H. Krystal and Duke University teaching psychiatrist Andrew D. Krystal .

Act

He taught at Michigan State University from 1970 until his retirement in 1991 .

In his academic career he was mainly concerned with trauma suffered by Holocaust survivors. With them he conducted more than 2000 interviews, which later became one of the foundations in the diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder .
