Tron Theater

The Tron Theater , formerly Tron Kirk , is a former church building and now a theater in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1970 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. The associated Tron Steeple bell tower is separately classified as a Category A monument.

history

In 1484 the Church of St Mary and St Anne was built on the site . Its bell tower was completed between 1630 and 1636. A fire, from which the tower was spared, devastated the church in 1793. As a result, the building that is preserved today was built based on a design by James Adam . The neo-baroque blind wall was added in 1899 by John James Burnet . This created an inner courtyard. In 1981 McGurn, Logan and Duncan set up a theater in the now obsolete church.

description

The Tron Theater is located on Trongate, southeast of Glasgow city center. Due to the curtain wall and the building in front of it, the north-facing main facade of the former church is only partially visible on the street side. The seven-axis-wide, Harl- plastered facade is relatively simple. The central main portal emerges from the facade with segmental arches . It is designed with an architrave , spire window and ornamental gable. Stair towers close off on both sides, ending in a semicircle at the rear. Much of the interior was lost in the course of the renovation work.

Tron steeple

The four-story bell tower with a square floor plan stands directly on the street. It is not directly connected to the church building. Its facades are plastered with Harl. There are passages with Tudor arches at the foot to allow pedestrian traffic to pass through . They do not correspond to the original condition, but were created by John Carrick in 1855 . The passage closes with a cross vault . The tower is designed simply. With the exception of the south facade, all facades on the top floor show tower clocks. A stone balustrade with pinnacles on the edges of the building runs above it . The pointed helmet that sits on it shows ducar windows that are designed as tracery .
